The Cherokee are one of the most favored tribal identities assumed by aspirant marginal “Indians.” An identity as Cherokee and Blackfoot was also elected by Sylvester Long, the tragic “Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance,” who was bom as a Black in North Carolina (Smith 1983 and 1988).
